kate went all crushy over tech guy right away and wrote about guru in that annoying “ohhh she’s so BEAUTIFUL and NICE i haaaate her” way. Tony and yvette were…exactly what that description makes you think they were like. I guess I’d rather have a slightly loose balance than ultra-tight gameplay at loss of versatility. Are characters maybe TOO versatile? Maybe, but it sure beats a Harbinger having just Paralysis Reap and Wilting Miasma until they’re level 30. Having replayed a bit of V in the mean has definitely clarified how much I like customization options V can feel more than a bit stifling, with classes having not even the quarter of options at their disposal. Nexus' were pre-existing, relatively normal characters, so I doubt the more out-there ones would fit much at all.

Especially as my characters in EOV were built around getting use outta the more unique voices, like the perpetually high-as-a-kite Herbalist, the sultry Warlock, or the ultracoward Necromancer. I'd rather they die on the localization floor than the whole game not come out here, and with 60 voices for a massively larger roster would've resulted in the same 20 or so voices getting reused again and again. Voices were great in EOV, but I'm not actually bothered by the loss of them in Nexus. Balancing is really freaking hard, I know firsthand. So I can't fault it for a little spotty finetuning of some classes, as it's still miles above I-III/2U. It clearly didn't have the lengthiest development time, being the second-last 3Ds game ever released, and being partially cannibalized by Persona Q2, a crossover released just after it. It took all the systems the previous games had developed, threw them all on the table, and took largely the best of each. I know I'd get hell for that if anyone actually read these, because I'm aware Nexus has a frothing hatedom within the community, but there it is. I don't necessarily mind the superboss being horseshit, but I guess it feels so weird because the highest difficulty of the game IS 'normal', and none of the other bosses/FOEs felt even slightly out of control (well, maybe Salamander).Īnd while speaking of favourites, honestly, especially when considering all the awful circumstances at its feet, Nexus is my favourite Etrian Odyssey. Maybe EOV's is borderline which was just throwing out ceaseless flames across the entire field, turn after turn. To this day, EOIV is the only time I've beaten a Etrian Superboss without resorting to ridiculous cheese tactics.

To get that final mark, I abused some combo of like eighteen buffs and debuffs and a trio of Full Breaking Landsknechts to disintergrate her in four turns. Abyssal Princess hits with borderline unsurvivable attacks nigh every single turn on Advanced/Heroic, even if you somehow know exactly what she's gonna do. assuming you played the rest of the game on Advanced and knocked it down to fight them on Basic. The two superbosses are fun, reasonably balanced fights, and natural extensions of the rest of the game's difficulty.
